The National League Central has 6 teams competing for the division title, while the American league West has only 4. Most divisions have 5 teams. The recent realignment of the divisions and leagues to me still does't make sense.

I know! It isn't fair. A team from the NL Cntral should be switched to the AL West. Then maybe the Rangers wouldn't be last place in the division.

You seem to be suggesting that each division should have 5 teams, resulting in 15 teams in each league, but that will never work. Think about it: For the majority of the season, there is no interleague play. If there are two teams per game, you'll end up with 7 games per league each day and one team not having an opponent to play. Unless the number of teams in each league is an even number, you can have all teams playing on any given day, thereby preventing the season from being a month longer.

I agree! It should be more like this:

American League

East
New York Yankees
Boston Red Sox
Baltimore Orioles
Tampa Bay Devil Rays

Central
Toronto Blue Jays
Detroit Tigers
Cleveland Indians
Louisville Sluggers (Expansion Team)

Midwest
Chicago White Sox
Minnesota Twins
Kansas City Royals
Texas Rangers

West
Los Angeles Angels
Oakland Athletics
Seattle Mariners
Oregon Blue Sox (Expansion Team)

National League

East
New York Mets
Atlanta Braves
Washington Nationals
Florida Marlins

Central
Philadelphia Phillies
Pittsburgh Pirates
Cincinnati Reds
Milwaukee Brewers

Midwest
Chicago Cubs
Colorado Rockies
St. Louis Cardinals
Houston Astros

West
Los Angeles Dodgers
San Francisco Giants
San Diego Padres
Arizona Diamondbacks

It has to be functional; being fair is a bonus.

Anyway... the NL Central tends to have two doormats instead of the traditional one. This doesn't make things harder on the eventual division champion; in fact, perhaps easier, since the unbalanced sked gives that many more opportunities for EZ wins.

Now, when ALL the teams in the division suck, like in 2006, then we end up with the "least bad" team playing on.

The AL has 14 teams and the NL has 16 teams so that everyday there is not a team with an off day. In order to do that they needed even amount of teams in each division, so they divided it like that.

i agree with you completely. 6 and 4 are screwed up and need to both be five so every division has the same number of teams competing for the title.

You can blame Bud Selig and the owners for that, when Selig was trying to get 2 teams to move [ i dont remember which 2 ] the owners told him to scratch. So being the spineless weasle that he is he took his own team [the Brewers] and moved them into the NL Central

Hey, that's a great point, but I knew it was a stupid idea when they re-alligned the league the last time; and I also think it was a dumb idea to have had the Brewers switch leagues.
