You watch Independence Day, the aliens would kick their asses. Same with Armageddon, and War Of The Worlds. Face facts people we are screwed.

Good point. I think there is a danger in films like this, they promote a simplistic, violent solution to complex problems. Armageddon, which you mention, is a perfect example - sending good ol' Bruce in to blow that goodam arab commie meteor to pieces would NOT work - it would if anything make the situation WORSE! I really think that this motif engenders a real belief that a simple 'heroic' strike against the baddie is the answer to everything!

Who wants to go watch a movie where everybody gets killed off? Who would be the hero? It would be possible to destroy an asteroid as in Armageddon or Deep Impact (which is closer to the truth of how it would happen). It shows that no matter what we face, we can prevail if united together.

If you want reality, go watch the news. Audiences love to cheer on the heroes and feel that they are on the winning side too at the end of the film. It's a bit of harmless escapism for two hours.

I am just waiting to see if they employ an American to play the part of John Smeaton (Glasgow Airport one man security force).

I don't think another outcome would be classified as a 'Family Film' or 'Blockbuster' and wouldn't take as much at the box office...
