It is one of the two requirements that leads you to having your baby. You have to dialate and efface so you can have him natural.

RE:
if your doctor tells you that the cervix is thinned out 50% during pregnancy, what does that mean?

This means that your body is preparing to have that baby here very soon! There are 2 things that have to happen in order to have your baby "naturally"; your cervix must dialate, and it must efface(or thin out). Your cervix is already 50% thinned out so you only have a little more time to go before it completes. To sum it all up, your body is just preparing for the birth of your little one by preparing the opening between him or her and the world!!!! Congrats!

It means that your body is getting ready for the baby. Mine started thinning at 32 weeks and I was put on bed rest for 3 weeks to keep the baby from coming too soon.

It has to thin out to 100% in order to have the baby. That means your body is getting ready. Good Luck!
