it is important to be nice because it's the right thing to do. You are considering someone else's feelings and showing respect for them. If you are being nice to them just to get people to think you are important than no because you are only doing it for yourself , you would not be a nice person at all.

I think you are right - it's important to be nice. However, isn't it possible to be both? To be important - which is to make (in my opinion) an important contribution to the world we are living in and to be a good person at the same time. In other words, a good person doing good things or substitute the word important for good and you see what I mean.
