"Meanwhile, Channel 4 newsman Alex Thomson was rapped after claiming coverage of Maddie made him SICK.
He said the conduct of Maddie’s parents, who were having dinner in a nearby restaurant when she was taken 67 days ago in Praia da Luz, Portugal, was “a contributory factor in the abduction”.
He was only telling the truth

No, you are missing the point! If he was to say "Madeleine's parents are totally without blame for what happened" would he be reprimanded for that? Or is it just that he said what lots of people are thinking, and for some reason or other, its all been hushed up?

AT LAST someone has had the guts to speak up and say what a lot of us have been thinking for the past few months. He deserves promotion ,not a reprimand. Let's hope this is just the tip of the iceberg and that other reporters and Tv stations open up the flood gates and flush out these two money-grabbing ,plotting sewer rats who couldn't care a damn about their kids.I hope the UK police and social services are standing in the queue too.

Comedy Central is hard to beat. It's always good for a laugh and is more truthful than Hannity, who is also good for a laugh and a perfect object of ridicule. Did you hear the Note to Hannity from John Cleese? A note to Shawn Hannity Aping urbanity, oozing with vanity Plump as a manatee, faking humanity Journalistic calamity, intellectual inanity Fox noise insanity, you’’re a profanity, Hannity.

Reporting is not about truth, its about expediency; and how the channel management want the topic to be viewed.
Media likes to think it can manipulate society, that it can make people think/believe what it tells them.
Obviously, when this story first broke, an "angle" was put up at a team meeting deciding the slant the channel was going to use, and the rest of the story built on it. Step outside the "party line" at your peril. I did not hear the report, but many of my friends have commented on it to me.. Truth is always the First casually............

I'd like to shake Alex Thomson by the hand.
Are there any of those awards that the public vote for where we can nominate this gutsy honest newsman!
It's good to see that there is a brave spirit amongst the media sheep.

Television news has to be unbiased, unlike papers and therefore the individuals opinions and beliefs cannot be aired and part of the report. Their ethos statements claims that they are unbiased and educational so they did act in an unacceptable way. The were only saying what they believed and were not saying 'the truth', these are just opinions. So yes, they are right in being punished.
Edit: He would still be reprimanded for that as its going against what the values of the television channel are. Although some people on here may find it hard to believe, television news cannot be biased and news presenters have it in their contract not to do things like this as it effects what the public are told and led to believe. We all understand what you are saying, but the fact of the matter is-any opinion on the case that he had of given that may have effected the beliefs of the public would have caused him to be reprimanded. You say 'he was only telling the truth' but he was clearly stating an opinion which means the story became biased.
Edit: Nancy D-its in their contracts-the values of the channel-im not saying the channel doesnt sometimes do things that are out of line but I am saying that they have a set of 'rules' so to speak that mean they cannot overstep the mark. All news channels do, this is basic media knowledge. As a degree media student i am aware of the boundries that television news and the newspapers have.

There are obviously a lot more people out there than you think that are happy to leave their children unattended on holiday why they enjoy an evening out. This is why criticism of the McCann's is not allowed in the media - because it is a criticism of how they all behave on holiday.

It's an opinion, not necessarily the truth.
Just read your note - yes, of course if he said that, he should be reprimanded also. That too is an opinion.

Though in the end of it, at the end of the day, what he said may be the truth, that is not his job,, We entrust the media with a greater power than that of a peace officer, we entrust them to be in places where we can not go, delve to the bottom of the issue and bring us information, what alex did was offer us his opinion, yes his opinion is one that many of us may reach, however we must come to that opinion on our own and not be persueded in any way by the reporter of the news.
When the media adds their own opinions or slants to any piece of data, all those who died for the noble institution are muffled and silenced all over again... we lose the data and all that we are left with is HYPE and a cheap version of the original Ideal, INFORMATION.
