2 knockout stages. Only the 10 top cars goes into the final stage. All depends on the timings on that session. The cars who got knocked out in the first 2 sessions are placed depending on their timings in their respective sessions where they got knocked off.
Not clear, check out the links below.

its called knock out qualifying,
first session all cars race the 6 slowest are knocked out and take their best times in that order
second session is the same and the next six slowest cars take the next six spots
the final session is the ten fastest cars and they go for the top ten spots,

the idea was it alows drivers to get multiple attemps for a fast lap and keeps the better teams from sitting in the garage untill the end of the session like they used to do in the old days, now days qualifying is almost as exciting as the race

there are 3 sessions. the 1st all 22 drivers post hot lap times and the slowest 6 driver take the last 6 grid spots. the 2nd the 16 drivers who didn't get knocked out go out and post lap times and the slowest 6 get knocked out and take grid positions 16-11. The
last round the 10 drivers who made it into the round post laps and that make up the last grid position's. each session is 15 minutes long.

I think there are three qualifying runs. First run for the top 16. Next run for the top 10. Last run for pole position.
