Is it veiled hostility?How do you deal with those people?cut them off or what?

yes I agree I always feel its veiled hostility,and I would personally avoid ppl like that.:-)

if what they are saying is true i suppose it can be helpful to better yourself and that is a good way to get back at them...
but that isnt an excuse as its sly and not very nice
the way i deal with it is to say something back about them that is worse, blunt and obvious that im being funny and then say 'just kidding' then they wont do it again.

Yeah, they mean what they said the first time and they add in the "just kidding" to make it seem like they are good people.... I just look at them and don't respond. Always makes them feel stupid, which in turn makes me feel better!

I think they are ar$ewipes, and I insult them back twice as bad, then say "Only joking" before i walk away and don't bother with them

I always counter with a harsher insult then say just kiddin with a real smarmy face. I feel great afterwards

My brother in law is one of these people and I would love to turn around one day and smack in straight in the mouth, but I think that might just upset my sister, so I just retort with something like 'I'm not even going to sink down to your pathetic little level' but say it as though I am joking, but really mean it!!!!!!!

In my humble opinion that is still an insult.
Just leave it or give him a lesson not to do it in the future.

They are idiots. If they didn't mean it then they wouldn't have said it. They are just to gutless to actually make their true opinions known and face the consequences of those opinions.
