To paraphrase Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, it doesn't matter which came first. It doesn't have any effect on how we live our lives today.

Egg for sure. So hen has evolved from something which is not mammal, and should be either an Avian or any group below, which means they all have an egg laying habit. Now the first mutations which will lead to a hen like creature has to appear in one of the eggs of the hen-ancestor.

Egg came first as per darwins theory. Some changes took place in the DNA of the egg of some bird. The modified bird born out of the egg was the hen.

Ok here we go. Hen is male and chicken is female.
So hen does not lay eggs. Once the Chicken lays an egg and the product comes out only then we can say it is chicken or hen.
Moral of the story is egg came first.

I have an answer that should satisfy religion and science. Single cell organisms evolved into different species that had to exist before they could lay eggs, as unchicken like as they may have been. It didn't have to take millions of years and everythingl didn't have to take place gradually, but as conditions where right, the esential process could have happened within a thousand years, an age/day. The foot print could be in earth made of matter of indefinite age, without the chicken being that age. There, now we can get on with the also important idea to love our neighbor and stop the overpopulation of people, the underpopulation of chickens and end hunger and war in the world. Oh, and in that case you would need a potential chicken before the egg, unless you want to consider the one cell animal as an egg or some eggs and some sperms.

i say...the hen!!because an egg can't survive just lying around on its lonesome!!it needs a hen to sit on top of it and incubate it in a sense... so the egg couldnt possibly have come first without a hen to hatch it!!

To call it a "who" requires a name... which is not provided.... therefore, the correct phrase would be: "which comes first"?
The hen comes first... Otherwise, there would be no warmth upon the egg to cause it to hatch..... Rather, the egg needs its hen for to hatch........
