Guys usually want to get a badass bike so that they can boast to their friends, but thats not really the point here. Try to buck the peer pressure and get a motorcycle that you can handle comfortably. The point is to learn and practice your skills on a bike that won't kill you. Then later on, you can progress on to larger displacement bikes.

Smaller bikes these days look great and are no slouches in the performance area either. I would suggest the 250 or 500 Ninja (preferably used) as they look great, are super reliable, easy to maintain and very forgiving for new riders.

Don't forget to take an MSF course in order to learn the basics of riding properly and always wear protective gear.
