Dryers, air conditioning, indoor malls, microwaves, fast food, cell-phones, blackberries, 2-3 cars/family, swimming pools etc. etc. etc.

N. Americans also use more electricity and water than any other nation in the world.

People in other countries (I don´t mean just the "3rd-world") don´t have all of these things, yet they are just as content, and usually healthier. How important are these things to you? Would you be willing to give them up?

Before you start slamming me, I guess I need to state that I am also from N. America - I´m a home-grown Canadian.

I think we do. I think our culture is one of entitlement, so that would extend to use of resources, materialism, being self-centered, etc. The haves are often comfortable with dismissing the have-nots as unworthy.

Once you've got something, you don't want to let go, even if it's good for all the others.

Yes. Yanks will always defend the indefnesible though.

I think they can do as they please- but they have to remember that other people livve on the planet too- it isn't Planet USA so have to bear some responsiblity for their lifestyles.

Though- the electricty could be generated from other means- including cleaner coal stations.

Their cars are too large in terms of engine capacity- I think they need to lower their engine size or run on LPG or diesel.
I read that the average distance travelled by most US cars is less than 80 miles per day- not very far and hardly justifiable using an enormous SUV with a 600 litre V-88!

You seem to forget 45 million Americans don't have Health Insurance.

I've been to the US a number of times and I'm always struck by the huge gaps in wealth and poverty. It has some very serious issues and most seem to be in denial.
It's a very odd place- it reminds of a richer 3rd world nation.
