Bug can mean many things:
Formally, an insect of the order Hemiptera, also known as the "true bugs". (Outdated taxonomies sometimes use the name Heteroptera.)
More colloquially, any arthropod (excepting most crustaceans); includes insects, but also non-insects such as spiders and centipedes.
Informally, a pathogen such as virus or bacteria that causes illness

A lot of insects.especially unpleasant ones have been mistakenly termed bugs. Bugs are very small things, bed bugs, microbes and viruses which could not be termed insects. Bugs is a term also used to describe faults in equipment .cars and so on.Also the various problems that affect computers. The world of insects is huge. Ranging from beautiful butterflies to not very nice creepy crawlies.

A bug is a general term usually associated with a plethora of inevertebrates.
Insects are group that reside within the category of invertebrates classification. Having 6 legs and 3 distinct body parts: Head; Thorax, Abdomen.
In general people refer to: ants. spiders, beetles, wasps, bees, flys as bugs... others even extend this to cover slugs, worms, snails etc (although less commonly).
In other terms Insect is a scientifcally defined classification, bug is undefined generalisation of small "insect-like" creatures.

A bug is an American word for what British English calls an insect. All insects are never called bugs in British English. The term bug is used when taking about a virus such as flu etc........ "I caught a bug last week".

For most people, bugs encompasses anything creepy crawly - spiders, centipedes, ants, cockroaches, worms, flies etc.
Strictly speaking insects have three main body parts - head thorax and abdomen, as well as six legs. This would encompass bees, ants, wasps, butterflies, grass hoppers, and beetles. But not spiders (8 legs) and centipedes (multiple legs). They come under arachnids, not insects.

Well technically, I am not sure, but I think of bugs as say like beetles, (with a shell) and insects as say a wasp or caterpillar or ant etc. I don't know why I think that, but I do.

A spider has 8 legs, and you get someone else to smoosh it. A bug has 6 legs and you can smoosh it yourself.
