Eleven is easy to say
onety one is not

Humans have a lazy mouth when it comes to language and if we can find a way to say it easier, we'll do it.

Case in point
Photograph sounds like Fotograf
Photographer sounds like Fotagrafer

Or "How do you do" We don't say it that way, we say, "how daya do"

Language is conservative; eleven and twelve are likely remnants of a previously used base 12 numeral system, as in French quatre-vingt-dis for 90 - lit. four-twenty (and) ten - is of an old base 20 system.
