i just asked this same question ten minutes ago and called the practice of doing this ''seperatism.'' apparently, people thought i was asking about segregation... oy...

how possible would it be for us to go back to seperatism? america did this in the beginning, and we continued that way for a long time. what are the pros and cons of seperatism? can it be achieved again? is it a wise idea? how would it affect our economy? would we most likely lose allies?

Yes, we should stay away from foreign interventions; and we were warned to do just this by George Washington, the first president under the Constitution of the United States.

No isolationism is not the answer - but neither is being a bully and an oppressor on the world stage. America needs to engage with the world on a diplomatic basis rather than through threats... essentially your foreign policy needs to become more mature and adult rather than childish and reactionary.

America has done (and continues to have the potential to do) much good on the world stage... but some of the focus of US foreign policy has also been extremely divisive, wasteful, aggressive and damaging. Replacing foreign leaders through asassination, funding rebellions, global wars on a variety of ideas (communism, drugs, terrorism), overly simplistic idealism (they'll greet us as liberators! or we're good and they're totally evil! mentalities) and the like has generally led to unfortunate consequences and increased suffering.

If the US wants to help the world then that's a noble goal... but like doctors they should remember that the first rule is to do no harm.

What happens when a small child is beaten on the playground and another who is bigger could stop it, now do they have the responsibility to do so?

I always say yes, it would appear that the US is fighting wars to earn oil or power, but if one looks closely we have done neither, we have lost our sense of what a true enemy is and have the balls to go after them.
Going into IRAQ was a bad idea, should have went after the source of all this world chaos, that would be IRAN.

Take them out and it would be a more stable world we live in, just don't ask a LIB as they will say the we are all war mongers, sometimes you have to fight and sometimes people have to do, that is the cruel reality.

Yes, the US should stay out of other countries affairs. When this happens, please God, conflicts outside the US will be solved in shorter time and more easily, and more people in the world wil like and respect the US. Though during both World Wars, the US did the right thing be intervening. But this was different, and the main difference one can give is, that in both World Wars, the US was fighting on the side of the victims, the Serbs, among others.

No, it's impossible. Isolationism does not work in our modern world. We are all interconnected economically. Thanks to the rampant granting of favored nation status and the exporting of so many of our manufacturing jobs overseas over the last two decades. NAFTA didn't help, either.

Plus, the religious scholars of the ME will never take their focus off of causing our demise. Therefore, we have to maintain strong allies within that region. Our new alliance with Iraq is a real windfall in our favor. The value of our presence there is something most Americans obviously cannot even begin to conceive of.

Good thing Bush figured it out for all of us. His accomplishments there have Saddam rolling over in his grave on a daily basis and no one can deny how upset the Iranians are with the prospect of having us so close by. The more bases we have there, the more closely we have them surrounded, the less likely another strike on American soil becomes. This is vastly important to our need to protect ourselves from those publicly and repeatedly calling for our destruction.

So when tragedy falls on another country, such as tsunami's and earthquakes, will you still want us to sit back and say it's not our problem?
