The Han Dynasty ruled China from 206 B.C. to 220 A.D. It was founded by Liu Bang who was its first emperor. its capital was at Chang'an (now Xian) then at Luoyang. Its history was divided into two periods: the Western Han and later the Eastern Han. During the Han Dynasty China had a strong centralized government. They used a civil examination based on merit and the teachings of Confucius to select officials. Education grew in importance and a university was built at Chang'an. Poets and prose writers developed a style that is still famous in Chinese literature. Artists produced glazed pottery and large stone carvings. The development of paper dates from this period. China expanded its territory and conquered what is now North Korea and Viet Nam. Overland trade routes extended to Europe. The Silk Road was started. Along this route silk and other products were exported to Rome. Even today Chinese people refer to themselves as the "Sons of Han".
