I was trying to work this out last night :O) after 45 minutes swimming breaststroke last night. I found this website which tells you how many calories you burn per pound of weight for both strokes:

It doesn't seem fair though that someone heavier than me burns more calories for the same amount of exercise :O(

per lap, breaststroke. But frontcrawl improves cardio better, however, it builds less muscle.

Front crawl, there is more movement involved and is a bit more energetic. Breaststroke is a gentle, more relaxing stroke.

I say breatstroke. This stroke uses more of your body and is generally slower meaning you have to work harder. Front crawl is easier and faster to use.
