There are a lot of programs or web sites you can try to see if Windows has an issue. I use IOBIT's free program at http://www.iobit.com/advancedwindowscareper.html
The other thought I had is it might be overheating. See if you can monitor the temp and see if that is shutting it down.

If your computer is continually freezing up on you, and you can't discern a pattern as to why, then what I'd do, if you were a client of mine, and I was sitting in front of your computer, would be to check the Event Log.
Whenever a computer locks up, stalls, hangs, etc, on anything, a log entry is created describing what happened, and, typically, what caused it. Might be a piece of hardware that is not responding. Might be a couple pieces of software that are conflicting with each other.
To get to the Event Viewer, with Win XP, you'll find it in Administrative Tools. In Vista, right-click the Computer icon, go to Manage, and you'll find it there.
Hope this helps. Good luck!

It's either a virus or malware.
Start in safe mode (Keep tapping F8 as the machine boots) turn off System Restore in My Computers Properties and do a virus scan and then a spyware scan. Restart the computer normally and turn on System Restore.
Free antivirus from http://www.free.grisoft.com
Free anti spyware from http://www.spybot.info

You either have a bad hard drive or bad RAM. The computer is processing and when it gets to a certain point accessing data on a bad spot on the drive or in RAM it will cause Windows to fail.
