Windows just thows files anywhere on the hard drive. In fact, it thows chunks of theme wherever it has room.
The bad part is to read the file, the hard drive has to go to those many places whenever it needs to use the file.
So there are degrag programs that go through your drive, and put each file back together into one spot.
But degfragging your pc only needs to be done every 6 months or so. Doesn't help all that much. If you feel compelled, you can get defrag programs that you can schedule to defrag on a regular basis, and 'continiously' if desired. If so, try IOBIT.com defrag (but there are hundreds out there).

Your hard disk doesn't necessarily store your files in one long continuous stream, the files get broken into fragments and stored all over the place. This makes them slower to read back as the hard drive has to hunt around for them.
De-fragmenting puts the file fragments back in the right order, one after the other on your hard drive, making them faster to read as the drive no long has to do the same hunting around for them. They are contiguous after defragging.

Fragmented files are files that have fragments strewn about different sectors of your hard drive. Contiguous files are files that are in the correct sequence. Think of it like this: a fragmented file would be like a (physical) file folder with it's documents all strewn about in different offices and out of sequence. A contiguous file would be like that same file folder, only in the proper order and location.

Don't worry about it. Just defrag your disk often. Everything runs smoother.
