We can place the blossom of (modern) greek literature in a period between the beginning of the 20th century and the end of world war II. Through out these years great authors gave rise to a unique cultural "renaissance" , their books having been transalated into many languages. One can mention Roidis, Papadiamantis, Kazantzakis, Myrivilis, Karagatsis, Venezis, while we must not forget two poets who have been honoured with the Nobel award: Elitis and Seferis...

The Rebirth of Greek Literature
Under Turkish rule, Greek literature virtually ceased, except in Crete. In the late 18th cent. two patriots, the poet Rhigas Pheraios (1751–98) and the intellectual Adamantios Koraës (1748–1833), sought to encourage a revival of Greek letters. The revolutionary society Philike Hetairea, founded in 1816, reflected the growing influence in Greece of the French Enlightenment and the rise of European romanticism; both furnished the intellectual framework for the War of Independence (1821–27) and spurred the postwar nationalist revival that awakened a modern Greek literature.

Besides Elitis and Seferis, two notable modern Greek poets, Cafavy also deserves a prominent place in Greek literature. Although born in Constantinople and having lived his life in various places, mostly in Alexandria, his ties with his Greek origin remain his main interest. His poems are wonderful both in terms of craftsmanship and atmosphere, but they lose vitality when translated, like poetry in general. You'll find his subjects are philosophical; Hellenic and Byzantine historical&cultural values, and of course, also personal and sentimental. I recommend his poems warmly.
