My favorite would be Saving Private Ryan because it's a very emotional movie and I like it despite its graphic scenes.

The Seven Samurai by Akira Kurasawa.

Why? Hmmm, that's tricky. If I was a student of film, I could probably produce a huge list of reasons and most serious directors could too as it's a big favourite of movie directors including George Lucas, Steven Spielberg and Terry Gilliam.

It's a classic story of the good guys vs the bad guys.

The characters are wonderfully varied and believable.

The photography is just amazing - especially the battle in the rain.

The story is quite simply fabulous.

It's original and it is unpredictable - or it was back when it was made. Since then it's been copied many times over.

The director isn't affraid to linger on an image for a long time, allowing you take in all the details.

It's a movie you can't forget. You analyze it not just for hours after, but for years after.

Coming in a close second is The Hidden Fortress - also by Kurasawa. Third for me would have to be American Beauty. Fourth, Eternal Sunshine Of A Spotless Mind, and fifth My Neighbour Totoro.

WEST SIDE STORY. (1961)

Winning a total of ten Academy Awards - including Best Picture-West Side Story set a brilliant standard for movie musicals that remains unsurpased to this day.Directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins from Ernest Lehman's spectacular screenplay, the film combines the unforgettable score ("Maria","America", "Somewhere," "Tonight")
of Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim with Robbins' exuberant choreography to create a transcendent fusion of realism and fantasy that will forever be a feast for the eye, the ear,and ultimately ,the heart.

A triumph on every level ,this electrifying musical sets the ageless tragedy of Romeo and Juliet against a backdrop of gang warfare in the slums of 1950s New York. Starring Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer,Russ Tamblyn and - in Supporting Actor Oscar -winning roles- Rita Moreno and George Chakiris,it remains "one of the most popular film musicals in history."

This movie would be too old for most of the people on answers as they are only used to seeing movies over the last ten or fifteen years .And yet there are hundreds of great movies made in the 40's 50's 60's and 70's it would take forever to see them all.And i must be honest i am not too impressed with to-days offerings of sequels after sequels of below standard films.

Geez, that's difficult. I used to see 2 movies a nite at one time. Action movies, like Raiders of the Lost Ark are springing to mind but I can't explain why. The Green Mile also. Too many to choose. Choose for me Kelly.

Raiders was so innovative and unexpected in it's action, while Green Mile so riveting and morally heart moving.

Running Scared or Sin City... its a tie.
Running Scared is a movie that finally brought the "grit" back in gritty movies... its raw and unapologetic... it brought every emotion that i could go thru during a movie and the cast is amazing.
Sin City was so well put together... they really brought Frank's novels to life... and the cast was brilliant!

Well I love a lot of movies but if I had to choose it would be between two. The Shining and Rocky Horror Picture Show.

The Usual Suspects. Thought it was a good story, well directed, and that the actors all did a good job at selling their characters. Most of all I just liked the story.

Defending Your Life by Albert Brooks (also starring Albert Brooks) because it is not only terribly clever and often hilarious, but it really makes you think about your own life and how you might do in that situation.

I Am Sam, because Sean Penn's performance is flawless and Dakota Fanning was perfectly cast.
