I have a small tank and shallow dirt substrate right now, I'm making some more as we speak. I put some lettuce in the tank. Just wondering if there's anything else I can do besides go to bed and put the dirt and some live insects in there tomorrow. His name is Filandrin' Pete, any advice? Thanks!

I always find toads near water, so make sure you have a shallow water bowl.
Do you really want to trap poor little bugs and worms in with something that eats them? Karma exists....you will choose to be trapped in a small container with something that will have you for lunch (so that you learn not to do it again).

How awful.
Would you rather have a shorter life of freedom, or a longer life of confinement? If someone told you, "You can live for 200 years if you never leave your house again," would you take that offer? Would you? Would a life like that be worth living?
If you'd like a pet toad, go to the pet store tomorrow and choose one that was "meant" to live in captivity, born in captivity, and raised in captivity. You may think you are "saving" this toad by making it live with you, but all you are really doing is taking it away from its rightful life.
I find toads in my backyard almost daily, but I just look at them and appreciate them as they are. I learned the hard way through many mistakes that it is always best to leave wild animals wild and that nothing could be more wrong than to take them from their real life, even with the best of intentions.
That was a serious answer. Nothing could be more serious than meddling with the life of an animal.

Get some live crickets at the pet store... or catch anything from worms to creepy crawlers if you're up to it. Also, find something that the toad can take shelter under like a small bowl or something. Ohh and, a small water dish, like the lid of a butter container... I don't know how small the tank is but these things might help.

It is ileagale to capture toads in most countries as you have to have a native wild life permit to keep them.

Look up information on wikipedia and try to find out what kind of toad it is. It will tell you what it eats and what it likes too. Also check and see if it's warm-blooded or cold-blooded. That's the most important thing.
And to the person who was upset about her keeping a toad... Grow up and live a little.

They live longer in captivity when people who keep them are experienced. Try and read up on it on the net, I'm sure you'll find something.
