13 is the youngest for fake/acrylic nails. I think anything younger is too young for the fake nails that are for women. And once they do get them done I'd say about a 1/4 of an inch free edge; meaning not long at all but also long enough to paint and have fun with. Colors don't really matter but I wouldn't think that red would look good on a girl. I was 13 for my first set and they were orange and my mom made me have them cut down...

I think any age is OK to have them done. I work in a high end preschool and I work with the 3-4 yr. olds. A mom pulled her child out of my class early becasue her 3 yr old had a manicure appointment! lol True story! But her nails WERE cutely french manicured. And it didn't look bad.. Her clothing was so cute too. Very beautiful girl.
I don't think trying to make yourself look good and feel good at any age is inappropriate. I think painting your nails orange or goddy colors and lengths should be a criminal offense though! ha ha!:)

When they are old enough to not mess it up the day after. I would say maybe some flowers or something... nothing to expensive. Still keep the nails fairly short. I saw an entire family of fashionistas outside an Outback the other day. These two girls (nine to eleven they looked) we're obviously absessed with looks. Straightened hair, one had her nails done, both had purses and one was texting someone. The son was talking to his mother (also very fashionable) about texting someone named Shelby. Just make sure this liitle girl doesn't grow up to fast like they did.

I think for anything under 12, you should only get a regular manicure, where they paint your actual nail. i think it should be clear coated with rounded tips and a small white part at the end (usually natural anways). Once you're 13 you can get the acrylic or gels. length depends on how long/short and slender/stubby your fingers are. medium if you have stubby/short fingers, and i think anything that doesn't extend 4 millimetres past the end of your nailbed for long slender fingers. french-tip always look classic and short french tip is always cute and clean. longer looks more adult or grown up!! but if you go too long, its gross and you look trashy!

12 or 13. Younger girls can wear nail polish . Girls shouldnt get nails too long, maybe just a bit more than normal.
