It isn't good to drink gatorade before a basketball game. The reason is that when you drink something with simple sugars in it (like gatorade), the sugar gets absorbed very quickly into your body. Then after the "sugar rush" is over (normally about 10 minutes), you go back to worse than normal energy levels. The best bet is to drink 150-250mL of water every 20 minutes during the game, and 250mL 5 minutes before the game. Instead of drinking stuff with sugar, eat a meal with complex carbohydrates (pasta, bread, rice etc.) 2 hours before the event. In the last 10 minutes of the game, you can drink gatorade or flat coke to get that boost of energy.

The Gatorade that my team used in college was called Gatorade and used only after a many hours long practice, but that Gatorade made out of powder mixed with water did not have the sweet taste of commercial Gatorade as I guess that kind of not real tasty, but very thirst quenching Gatorade was not loaded will all of the sugar which commercial Gatorade has.
During practice only water was used as during a game except for half time where water plus if you wanted it orange slices and a can of Coca Cola were available.
I don't know if there are two types of Gatorade. A less sugary Gatorade used by college and pro teams and the much more sugary commercial Gatorade.
Regardless, only water was around the bench during a game with no Gatorade ever available on game day. And, only water was used during practice with non-commercial Gatorade only available in unlimited amounts after practice had ended.
It seems like commercial Gatorade has almost 100% of its calories from sugar. Tons of sugar so that it well sell good commercially.

drink during the game. you lose fluids while having a sweat, you replenish it with Gatorade during time outs or half-time. The body absorbs it right away contrary to belief.
otherwise, if one is a bench player, i say, don't drink at all! the ones on the floor need it more than the ones cheering on the sideline.

During-so you can replenish the nutrients you lose during play.
Typically, from my experience, guys like to eat or have carbs/protein before games. Some guys just take two scoops of peanut butter to satisfy this.
Stay hydrated during the game. You sweat when you play, you need to get that water back.

During the game.
It gives an energy boost so it prly works best during action. It is best to drink WATER before any game. Even better to drink water several days before a game because then you know for sure that you are hydrated. Being hydrated can influence you gametime performance a lot. w/o hydration you move slower, are less alert and get worn out sooner.

During the Game: The sodium content in your body excretes itself when you sweat. The Gator Aide puts the sodium back into your system. This is also helps prevent heat strokes that are due to low sodium.

You need to drink before and during. Before is more important and water can rehydrate during but gatorade does more than the water does. The electrolytes in the gatorade are very important to your body and rehydration. It replenishes salts that you lost in your sweat. So do both.
