If me and my future mate carry a gene that could cause a defect in our children? Many of the ones you see and hear about are caused by bad genetic mixing, and I don't want my child to suffer because I chose the wrong man to reproduce with.

yes you can have genetic testing done before having children, you have to ask your doctor to refer you to a genetics specialist....it does cost money though, they take samples of your blood and your husbands... takes about 2 weeks before you get any information back in .. on results... good luck...

Sure, and it is a very smart way to go. Simply look up genetic counseling in the phone book or call your regional medical center for a referral. Make sure it's the real deal and not a phony anti-abortion clinic. The medical center referral should insure you avoid that nightmare.
It's painless and it could save you and a child a life of misery. Good luck and don't worry!

I would do a family medical history on both sides to try and determine if there might be future problems.
