I mean the kind you use when wrapping a gift. NOT toilet paper.

Original purposes was protection... to line boxes... items were placed in for safe keeping or as a gift, boxes not bags. The the gift bag was invented... so the craft of actually wrapping a gift is going out of style, just like mailing a letter. Grab a wad of tissue, swaddle the gift and cram in a $2 sack... how imaginative.

to clean our selves when we go to the restroom, use if we run out of tissues, use if u run out sanitary feminine products in an emergency, remove eye make-up , wrap houses, for a spill, and that's all i can think of.

I always thought because of its softness it was used to for one of the following: a) blowing your nose, b) sneezing, or c) drying your tears. Obviously, it's used for much, much more.
