It depends on how bad they want what they are going after. When Edison invented the light bulb he tried 10,000 times. When asked how he felt about that he said "I didn't fail at creating the light bulb 10,000 times. I successfully discovered 10,000 ways how not to do it."

of course, if we are talking about trying to help someone who does not seem to want our help or heed our advise. eventually we end up giving up, it is very draining to waste that kind of energy.
