"Alternative" energy sources such as solar, wind, tidal, etc. have a place in our blend of energy in the future, but the fact is they simply can not provide enough energy to satisfy the demands of our modern energy-hungry lifestyle.

Nuclear energy is the ONLY energy source that can provide large amounts of emission-free firm energy. (firm means that you know how much it will produce tomorrow, next week etc., as opposed to wind and solar which are dependant on weather).

Until we figure out how to use fusion, there are no reasonable alternatives to nuclear. There are already 440 nuclear reactors around the world, producing about 16% of the world's energy supply. About 100 more reactors are being built or planned. Nuclear fuel (uranium) is plentiful, and is produced in politically stable countries like Canada, USA, and Australia. In the future, we may use thorium for nuclear fuel which has the added benefit of being impossible to convert to nuclear weapons.

The only reasonable argument against nuclear power is what to do with waste. Another fact - nuclear energy produces less waste and less radioactivity than coal-fired plants (on a per megawatt basis) so the argument should be what do we do with the radioactive waste from coal fired plants.

Wind energy, geothermal energy, solar energy and wave/tidal energy are all excellent alternatives to fossil fuels if used efficiently. Hydroelectric energy is also good but because it disrupts river ecosystems, I personally would not go for it. Biomass (animal and plant matter) can also be of good use in automobiles and electrical production, and if possible, nuclear fusion, if Man is able to master it, can also be an excellent alternative as it is clean and does not produce as much waste as fission.

we are so far behind on getting any of this technology up to speed. For cars the energy should be hydrogen but that takes electricity to make which should come from safe nuclear plant.

there are lots of alternatives...geothermal...wind...solar....tidal waves...all these can be harnessed for energy...
