What is the least expensive way to create a patio? It needs to be functional for cooking and entertaining. It also needs to be something I can do on my own. I am very busy and have no experience with renovating.

Find a tile store/warehouse near you and see if they will give you broken tile for free. You can use it to create a sort of mosaic patio, and all you have to pay for is the mortar. It's a lot easier than it sounds...See the link for directions.

Any brick or tile patio would cost you more to maintain. A cheap maintenance free patio is poured concrete done by a professional.

sidewalk pavers will work well
16" by 16"

I bought mine at Lowe's on clearance for around $1.50 ea

still they only cost around 3 bucks a piece (this will greatly vary by style)

best of luck
