Ethan Frome fits because he was the main character in the book by Edith Wharton. As someone just said both books are about adultery. But what sticks out in my mind is Edith Wharton's "Ethan Frome" is based on "guilt", while Hawthorne's "Scarlet Letter" is based on "shame". Hester Prynne, the heroine, is punished by the community and has to wear a scarlet "A" for adulterer. Her punishment is based on "shame". But in "Ethan Frome", also set in New England, the main character has feelings of "guilt" that prevent him from leaving his wife for her younger, prettier cousin. His punishment is mostly internal, not by the community. In both cases the individual is stunted by forces outside their control and by society. If you like my answer please give me a "Best Answer"

if you haven't read the books then you're screwed.

if you have read them think about this:

1) who is the main character in "ethan frome"?

2) what are the settings (time and place) of the two books? can you summarize what the two books are about in 3-5 sentences? who are the main characters and what relationships do they have to each other? what do the main characters want and what is keeping them from having it? what happens to the main characters in each book?

answer these questions for each book and then look for similarities between the two.

Considering the novel is about Ethan and his family, but specifically his ill-fated romance, I would say the title is befitting the book. As far as connections, the only thing that really jumps to my mind are the themes of adultery and ostracism from society because of it.
