I hate to inform you that just copying a movie isn't that cut and dried.
You must have the correct software to do it, the correct Media you are using to copy to and the correct speed to make the copy as well there are really svseral things that can affect a clean crisp copy. Look for DVDShrink on Google that will get you started.

Oh one last thing depending on the optical drive you have in your machine don't just go out and buy the latest in media, your burner may not be capable of burning at the newer higher speed media. Stick with DVD-R Media

If you have a DVD burner then you also need a software that would enable you to burn them. If youre using Windows Xp or Vista, then you need to buy their burning software which is NOT included in the operating system. Go to the Nero website for information on their software.

I have had the same problem with disks that have never been used. In talking to tech support about it, they suggested that some settings for my drive may have been accidently been changed and causing the problem. The solution they suggested was to reset the settings back to the default ones, and explained how to do this. I have not tried this yet for various reasons, but it may work for you. Try calling tech support for your system, and maybe it will jhelp.

... use a blank one.
Seriously, even if it wrote 1 sec. of data it's not blank. You may have to try DVD+R instead of -R. Also check out DVD-RW and DVD+RW.
