Doe anyone know how many months ahead do movie theaters show upcoming movie previews for?

It depends on how soon the filmmakers want to start building word of mouth. I've seen the previews for some films that weren't due out until a year from the first date the preview was shown. J.J. Abrams has the "mystery movie" preview that everyone's buzzing about, but nobody knows the title. (It's being shown before TRANSFORMERS).

All anybody knows is the release date: 1-18-08.

I think it depends on the movie; but I also think it's pretty far ahead: I started seeing previews for R.E. 3 back in march, and it won't come out until the fall. I think they try not to preview too much more than 6 months in advance, though.
This is not something I'm absolutely certain of, though.
