Instead of getting rid of my old computer, I thought maybe I could use it as a external hard drive. Is this possible without taking the machines apart?

Via a router, you can either make the old computer a server, or you can make a peer network, that'll allow you to use both of them, and have each get access to the other's disk drive(s). ~

There are a couple of ways you can either enable file sharing and or connect them together with a Ethernet Cable and drag and drop to the machine you want for storage. Or you can tie the 2 together with a Router and transfer data like that. Or even better than either of those methods is to buy an external Hard Drive and you can store data from either or both Externals are cheap.

Yes; but you would have to have both machines running and wired to each other via the ten pin comm port. The wire is not expensive. Files and operating systems are best the same but if the old one is xp and the new vista there should not be a problem as most xp and vista programs are compatible.

Vista is not compatible at all with XP, so it wont work. If i were you, you should convert your Vista to XP because Vista is not compatible with many things including most printers.

You could do this using file-sharing, then you could map the remote folder to a drive on your Vista box.

but you'll need a local network to do this..

You can use Network cable (UTP) to connect to your old computer( peer to peer).
or you can installed the old harddisk into your new computer. but you need to open both of your CPU to move it.

cheers
