We found a snake-like creature in the surf off the beach of the Gulf of Mexico in Port Aransas, Tx; seahorse type head is straight, not curved and clear with a brown line down the center; body resembles a snake by movement or an eel w/out any fins; tannish, clear color; very thin; looks like a baby; tiny scales but not like a snake! We were shaking the sargassum seaweed catching the tiny sargassum shrimp, fish and crabs and a couple of these fell out!

You might have a species of pipefish or trumpet fish - these are relatives of seahorses (hence the similarity of their heads), but with a straight body. Have a look at some images: http://images.search.yahoo.com/search/images?p=pipefish&fr=yfp-t-501&toggle=1&cop=mss&ei=UTF-8 , http://images.search.yahoo.com/search/images;_ylt=A0geu71UsJFGEy8B2VBXNyoA?ei=UTF-8&p=trumpet%20fish&fr2=tab-web&fr=yfp-t-501

I want to see this! Can you post a pic...or I'm just over in Corpus so I'll stop by tomorrow *LAUGH* (joking)! I spend a lot of time at the beach near you and I haven't seen anything like this! The alligator gar fish answer doesn't sound right because they do have fins. I do remember pulling something out of the water by the old ferry dock in Corpus that looked like a strange eel with a pointy head, but I cut the line immediately so I didn't get a good look! (scared the heck out of me...thought I was pulling up some poisonous sea serpent!).

If you still have one, take it to the guys at Offshore Adventures (Crabman Marina in A. Pass)...those guys have been fishing these waters for years and have probably seen it all. One of the smaller fishing guide services in Port A. may also be able to help you!

Im from Corpus (just down the bay from Port A) and have been told that pipefish are common in the deeper waters around here. that is probably what it is. Pipefish have a seahorse like head with a straight body. Poor little things might have gotten tangled in the seaweed and pushed to shore.

pretty sure it's still a seahorse: if you were a waterbreather, you would be writhing on the beach like a snake too, get it back in the water!
