My friend has a fairly large one...about 6 inches. The eel will only eat live food. Right now he's in a 20 gallon but he wants to upgrade to a 55, possibly with discus...Any suggestions?
Thanks!

It's a dinosaur eel.

You don't mention what species this is, and the bichirs get rather large - usually at least a foot, the ornate gets up to 18+ inches. You should try to find out the exact species, then keep it with fish it couldn't possible get into its mouth as an adult.

Here is a link to care for the Sengal bichir, one of the more common species for sale: http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/profiles/696.htm
