The most important rule is to get rid of all those pesky fractions.

How can you do this? Try multiplying everything by 15. Then:

7y - 75 = 3y - 15
so
4y = 60
so
y = 15

Hope this helps.

Multiply each side by 15.

1. Solve for y

15 (7y/15 - 5) = 15 (y/5 - 1)
7y - 75 = 3y - 15
7y - 3y = -15 + 75
4y = 60
y = 15

2. Check answer

7(15) /15 - 5 = 15/5 - 1
7 - 5 = 3 - 1
2 = 2

15 is the correct answer.

7y/15 - 5 = y/5 -1
multiply by 15 on both sides:

7y - 5*15 = y*3 - 15
7y - 75 = 3y -15
7y - 3 y -75 = 3y - 3y - 15
4y -75 = -15
4y = -15 + 75 = 60
y = 60/4 = 15
