Males have longer front claws. Males also have longer tails that are thicker at the base of the tail. Males also tend to be smaller then the females.

Usually if you spot a painted turtle in a pond in the spring or early summer, it's probably a female trying to find a nest.

You cannot tell the sex of a turtle until it is at least four inches big. The claws/nails will be longer on a male and the tail tends to be thicker and longer.

This is a link to the genitals of a male turtle and will occasionally be seen by the owner (known as flaunting).

Until they hit about 4", you cannot be sure.

When they hit teen size, you can tell them apart by nails and tails.

Nails- males have long, elegant front nails.

Tails- males have long tails with the vent opening near the middle.

Females have plain nails and short tails with the vent near the base.

Males also develop in-curved bellies, while females stay flat or slightly bulgy.
