Vista Home Basic- no. For Home Premium with the Aero interface, 1GB is definitely needed, and 2GB is better.
Extra RAM is always good for opening lots of windows, but if you only run a couple of things at once, then no- you wouldn't really need it.

i don't know about vista but i have a old comp that only has 256MB of ram (memory) and uses xp with a Pentium 3 processor and almost never freezes just has trouble with new games. so it maters on how fast u want ur comp to run the more ram the more temporary memory the faster

recommended 1 GB.
2GB is more than recommended.
that mean u dont really have to use 2 gigs but yes if u use 2 gigs of course your pc will faster
