other than the self esteem boost some people get from them, no effect at all

Nothing, they are stupid.. we were better off with the thumbs down for a question.
But then again, what's the point of points? What's the point of any of it??
I'm just here to try and give helpful, informative answers and that's it. Because there ain't no shiny new corvette waiting for us at level 10.
