To compensate for missed time in the calendar year. Other calendars are more accurate and don't need to include a leap year.

I'll make this one simple. The Mayan calendar was precise. The stupid Spaniards killed all the Mayans because they thought that the Mayans were stupid and they wanted their gold. The Invisible College finally discovered how to explain a number less than 0 about 300 years ago. (The Decimal System) and so the Julius Ceasar Calendar was replaced by the Gregorian Calendar, but there was so much confusion involved in the creation of both of these calendars, that the people that created them realized that there are actually almost 366 days in a year instead of 365, so they improvised a system that was close but not quite accurate. Thats the reason for a leap year. Also if you want to understand the basis of all measurements (metrology) then begin by going to www.RobertLomas.org, You will be amazed. Also, it was Enoch, the Grandfather of Noah, that created the first known calendar with the help of a seraphim named Uriel. That calendar was later copied on a Grand Scale and eventually became known as Stonehenge. So you see, our perception of history and understanding of the element of time are never what we would expect to discover.

A true solar year is actual closer to 365 1/4 days.
So every 4 years the 1/4's are added up to make an extra day.
It is not quite a 1/4 either so every 400 years the 1 days extra is not added (i.e. no leap year).
If leaps years did not occur, we would eventually celebrate Christmas during the summer.

To compensate for the earth's orbit around the sun, which is about 38 minutes shy of 365 1/4 days.
I just wish they hadn't put the extra day in the winter. I could deal with June 31st every 4th year.

We are calculating each year as 365 days while it is more than that. Actually it is 365.25 days. It is not practicable to have a 0.25 day and hence once in four years we add 1 day to the year and compensate the quarter day left out.

Why for the FROGS of course!-They are entitled to one tiny day of a holiday........after all, thanks to the card companies (Hallmark, etc.) there are holiday's for just about everything; I'm not surprised if there will be a "Pet Rock Day!"
(But there probably is already!)
Cheers

Because God did the calendar the way he wanted it. And man tampered with it.
