It's not so much as to when you plant them, it's when do you let them bloom.
I raise and sell mums, I purchase from Bristol Mums in Bristol Connecticut.
Mums should never bloom before August most should bloom from September even until November. They need to be cut way back in June or even July then all new growth and buds need to be pinched back until the end of July.
They like full sun and cool weather.
The mums tradition has been passed down generations. Today, Jerry Heresko is the proud owner, and third breeder of Bristol Mums serving the United States.
So the mums seen and grown all over North America actually originated here in Bristol!

Mums are fine now. I'm in the Chicago SW burbs.I usually plant mine in the first week of August. That way they get full by the fall. They don't require too much water and can tolerate the heat fine. Water like you would water Black eyed susan or Purple cone flower.

they would not be available on the market if it were not time to plant them...get them started, get a nice cold drink and enjoy the fruits of your labor this fall. They will love you year after year for planting them now....in hot weather, keep moist.
