Martina Navratilova is undoubtedly the greatest female tennis player of all time. Steffi Graf is way up there as well. Navratilova, however, faced so many more great players than Graf.

Navratilova's Achievements:

-Turned pro at 16
-18 Grand Slam singles titles
-40 Grand Slam doubles titles (31 women's, 9 mixed)
-9 Wimbledon singles titles
(and much more)

She was just an amazing player. Martina Navratilova is THE greatest female tennis player of all time.

I think each era has it's own "greatest"

You simply can not compare Martina Navratilova to Serena Williams as the games they played lived in two different eras.
If you put two players of two different eras..
ex: Martina Navratilova (at her best), vs Serena Williams (at her best)

Martina would simply lose...like 6-1, 6-0....

so I say:
the greatest are...
Billie Jean for the 60's to 70's era
Navratilova for the 80's to 90's
Steffi Graf for the 90's to late 90's

As for the 21st century...the current "nominees"
1)Serena Williams
2)Justine Henin
3) Venus Williams

aren't done with their careers. My gut feeling is that Serena will be the best of the 3 when they all retire.

Steffi Graf because she still won grand slams even during the late years of her career. She could have won the 4 grand slams in a year 3 or 4 times over if not for her recurring back problems late in her career., She won all 4 grand slams in the same year in 1988, and she would have done so again in '95 and '96 if she had played in the Australian Open on both occassions, as she won the other 3 slams then.

I think Steffi Graf, at her peak, could've beaten anyone. In '88-'89 she made all 8 Grand Slam finals, winning 7 of them, plus the Olympic gold medal. Won 22 career Grand Slam singles titles and was still ranked 3rd in the world when she retired. And had the most wicked-sexy forehand in the history of the game.

Martina Navratilova.

I think one of the Williams sisters (either one) could be, but they've got too many outside interests...Navratilova was just a tennis player, and worked hard at that and nothing else.

MONICA SELES.

she was dominating everyone, routinely beating steffi graff, and surely would have won most of the titles graff did had she not been stabbed by a jealous german steffi graff fan who hated seles for her domination.

it's one of the greatest tragedies in modern tennis. the years seles missed due to this murder attempt. i believe she was the best ever.

Yea, Monica Seels is real good. But then of course there's the Williams Sisters, and Maria Sharapova. [=
