In case early reservations are needed, Im looking for a special restaurant, lots of lights and decorations, very festive which kids would really enjoy. Formal dress is fine and price is not a concern. Do any of the nicer hotels hotels (St. Francis, eg.) offer something? South Bay, East Bay or San Fran area.

You have to try the Nutcracker Tea at Top of the Mark!

They usually run it on weekend afternoons all through December. It's a beautiful formal high tea (you choose from six varieties of tea) with a variety of finger sandwiches, savory hors d'oevres, and spectacular pastries and desserts, a buffet spread that is hearty enough for a meal. In addition to nutcrackers and other terrific holiday decorations, they serve a special tea table with treats for the kids (peanut butter and jelly tea sandwiches and M&M petit fours).

And, of course, the views from Top of the Mark are spectacular. The Fairmont Hotel across the street also has a famous "Gingerbread Tea", but without the views. Yes, you definitely do need reservations well in advance for both of them, probably by about Thanksgiving. And the bonus is that you are only about a 3-4 block walk from Union Square, so you can end the day by walking down to see the huge Union Square Christmas Tree all lit up, and all the lights and cute animated holiday displays in the Union Square store windows.

As the Bay Area Critic, I'd like to recommend the following restaurant:

MacArthur Park (650) 321-9990 27 University Ave, Palo Alto, CA

It's large older restaurant that is extremely festive during the holidays. It's like something out of the movies around Christmas time. The exterior and interior is lined with lights.
Festive food... even bread pudding! :)

I've been there a couple of times and have always been impressed. You'll have to make a reservation. Also, they can accomodate large groups.

If they have an Elephant Bar, that would be a good choice. I know that there are a few in the south bay. They have an animal theme that the kids will enjoy and a wide variety of moderately priced food.

Try Cityscape. It's located at the top Hilton in Union Square. On a clear day, you can see practically all of SF... Golden Gate Bridge, Coit Tower, Alcatraz, Union Square. We normally do our holiday brunch there. http://www.cityscaperestaurant.com/
