Because the federal government has no responsibility to do this. If it did, all you would get out of it is their way to make federal ID cards. Health care wouldn't improve, it would just be more crowded because every crack head would go to a doctor every time he had a stomach ache.

Britain, France, Canada and Cuba (to name a few) DO NOT HAVE FREE HEALTHCARE. Someone MUST pay the caregivers or FORCE them to work. The people of those countries pay much higher taxes and the care they get is less than in the US. If the person receiving the care is lucky enough to come to the US and can afford it, then they get good healthcare. The problem with US healthcare is simple. The caregivers are paid from giant pools of money created by insurance companies and the US government. Thus.. there is no incentive to keep costs low due to the lack of competition in the market. The administrators of the source of the funds set the price for care instead of the caregivers competing for clients under the natural law of supply and demand. Try asking the doctors office how much it costs to have your tonsils taken out. They don't know the answer to that question! This all goes back to when the Pilgrims first came to America: That first year, they put all the grain in one storage and shared. They soon discovered that no one was contributing to the grain supply and the settlement was in trouble. (Communism tried and failed.) The next year, they each stored their own grain. Then they shared and bartered with each other. A free market was born and the settlement thrived! Those who wanted a better life worked harder and had more, and those who did not want to work had little or nothing. (The "have mores" still take care of the "have lesses" via charity) You have the choice or opportunity to thrive or fail on a personal level! (This is Freedom.) If there were no health insurance companies and no healthcare subsidies from the Government, people would have to plan and save for their own care. Caregivers would have to compete for the available money in the community. The cost of healthcare would be less and inflation in healthcare would be lower. Tadah! (Bb chord over a Ab bass)

I think the challenge with this is that you have people where they are irresponsible and they choose a lifestyle that is irresponsible. Those people make up a large # of people and billions of dollars in healthcare. I'm refering to people who have sex with multiple partners and people who smoke packs and packs of cigarettes everyday. Those people end up costing everybody billions of dollars. There's no control or motivation to live a healthier lifestyle - only license to do whatever you want. I don't know if I'd like free healthcare since they have this in Canada and for many conditions - it's almost impossible to get a specialist and people who want a decent level of care end up paying the price - while the masses barely get what they need. There are pros and cons either way. But, most hospitals I know of have systems and programs to help the poor already and the medicaid system isn't great but at least there are alot of measures already in place. If the governement simply reimbursed for medicaid at the same cost as a regular client pays - then the insurance rates would go down and things would balance out for everybody. I have a friend who did a study on that.

Because there is NO such thing as FREE healthcare in ANY country. We'd still pay for it; it would just be in the form of having our income tax doubled.

And, of course, the quality of healthcare under socialized medicine is worse than free market... and on top of that it would be managed under another bloated government bueracracy, making it harder to use and cost huge amounts of money to manage.

In short... "Free" healthcare would cost us more for less of a return. Not a good deal.

A few basic thoughts.
First, this is a capitalist country, not a socialist. With earned wealth comes privilege. What good is striving to get ahead if the government is only going to take away whatever gains you've made so that they can then give it to someone who's not worked as hard or planned ahead as well? I for one, like having that carrot dangled in my face. If you want socialism, move to Cuba.
Second, you get what you pay for. If you think it through, do you REALLY want the government making your healthcare decisions? Hillary tried something akin to this with her HMO scheme. She turned the doctor's decision making process over to the insurance companies. She was absolutely convinced that the insurance companies know more about your healthcare than do the physicians and that they could save money, thereby making it more affordable. It didn't become more affordable nor did they make good decisions about your healthcare. Brilliant. I'll pass.
Lastly, as a small business owner I never get anything back. Instead, I have my accountant sign it over to the IRS to help pay for the coming year's taxes. So much for the accusation of "corporate welfare."

America already has free healtcare, ask the Mexican Illegals, and also has healthcare for Americans, and fees are based on scale according to family income, which make it cheaper for them to be covered, every state has programs like that. Why would I want my tax to pay for your healthcare, I do not like it paying for the Illegals as it is. As for as National Healthcare, this is the biggest bunch of BS, and I sure hope people do not fall for it, because our taxes will really sky rocket.

Why not do a two tier system, one way would be to keep what you have now for those who are happy and the other way would be to form a coop and roll all the medical progams out there that we are paying for anyways like Veterans , medicaid, medicare, and make the membership affordable and buy medicine on a big scale. What suprises me is that people don't think they are paying for national healthcare and they clearly are, it just needs to be managed better and offer accessability to people, if you set up this coop it would proably save money.

Because to many people think it will either cost them more money or decrease their own level of service. Some just don't want it because they are deluded in the belief that they won't need it (young and stupid)

Poor people do get health care (not the best care mind you, but it's still there)

But I have noticed one difference among people I know, those who are on state aid are given many more prescriptions then those on private insurance. That kinda worries me.

My best friend lives in Canada and while their healthcare may be free, I'll take ours over theirs ANY DAY. It's difficult to get "emergency" appointments and if you are being treated for something chronic, the time between your appointments could be months. My friend's mother was diagnosed with cancer last year and I swear she's going to die just from waiting to see doctors and get treatment going! The last time she took her mom to see the doctor was last month. When she came back, I asked her when her mom's next appointment was and she said THREE MONTHS! I couldn't believe it!

There are also times when her little girl has something that I would think nothing of calling my ped about or making an appointment to have it checked out and that's just not an option for her. She'll e-mail me looking for a home remedy for something like strep throat or pink eye because she just can't get in to see the doctors.

We've seen how disastrous it is in other countries. In Canada people die waiting for operations. In Cuba it's even worse.

Why would we want anything controlled by the government anyway? Look at how bad our government school system is. You want the same mess with health care?

I admit there are problems with health coverage, but putting the government in control would make it 100 times worse than it already is. There are other solutions.
