Oh, you sent me down memory lane. Yes, I remember those curtains and the usher with the flashlight.. He always told me to get my feet off the seat in front of me... I would sit in the theatre when I was young and wonder how they cleaned those curtains, LOL
Also, it was one ticket for a double feature and you could stay the second time if you wanted.
Wonderful question!!!

Oh yes I remember it well! There were seats called 'loges' which slid back a little and were extra soft...these cost more than regular seating. For a boyfriend/girlfriend situation, there was the back row of the balcony for necking. The show included the Feature, the Second Feature [often a western or comedy], a Cartoon, a Newsreel, and sometimes a Travelogue..which always ended with something like "...and let's bid farewell to the lovely island of ----". In the city of my childhood, we had a movie house that played nothing but Westerns...it was called the Hitching Post, and the ushers made sure the kids didn't bring in their cap pistols. We had an all foreign film theatre too [the Esquire] where everything had subtitles and between the two features, they served coffee out in the lobby and all the intellectuals stood around explaining the Deep Meanings and Key Scenes to each other.

Yes, I had .25 cent allowance. It cost .10 to get in, a nickle for a candy bar and a nickle for popcorn. The nickle I had left over bought an icecream cone on the 2 mile walk back home. I would never have dreamed of asking someone to pick me up and give me a ride home, gasoline was 23 cents a gallon! When I got older and the usher would ask" how far down would you like to sit" I would reply,"well, all the way of course, anything less would be uncomfortable". Do you remember the serials that would be run each Saturday and be continued until the next Saturday.? I met Lash Larue, the cowboy with the whip, when he came to McComb, Mississippi. It was a better time.

Yes, I remember. They gave away plates and cups if you went to a Thursday night show, we used to go in groups of 2 or 3 and not be afraid to walk home in the dark. There were ushers with flashlights and popcorn and candy that we could afford. It was a good time and the movies were a weekly thing that all of us could afford with pennies from our allowance that we earned from helping our parents or from cutting grass or tending flowers for a lady down the street. Those times are gone forever and so are the good movies we enjoyed so much.

They were the days when we could leave the house unlocked and the windows left open. The old Ritz theatre, red velvet curtains, the usher, the columbines lollies. I am in my early 50's but i have a long memory of child hood. The first feature film i remember seeing was Tammy's in Love, the first cartoon i seen before the movie, Felix the Cat. They were the days, families did things together.

It was wonderful! The movie theater in our town was the Rialto Theater, and before my time it was a vaudeville theater! There were giagantic red velvet curtains with long. gold tassels...the chairs were red velvet, too. On both sides of the second floor, were 2 private boxes, where very wealthy and important people saw the plays and musicals. There was also a "balcony"...teen-age couples often sat there to sneak kisses and hold hands, where the grown-ups couldn't see them! Those were the "good old days"!!!!

I grew up in Conn...born 1940 and it is amazing how the movie experience on Saturdays' has been almost the same in many parts of the country...One of the reasons for remembering is that movie theatres had a/c and it was always a relief to go as most homes were without it...Great question and it really stirs the mind....

It's funny you should ask this question. The other day when you asked what were some of the things we missed, after I had posted my reply, I thought about the old, grand movie theaters . The ones with all the gilt and swag velvet. The tiered seating. It was a spectacle...

Oh my yes. It does my little heart good to walk down this part of memory lane. The curtains were usually red velvet or some other very heavy material. Movies were entertaining and did not have to have ratings. Saturdays started off with cartoons and newsreels not commercials before the movie.
Ah yes I remember them well. Thanks.
