you should buy at 25 gallon tank , they are about 35ish. and put the tank near the window. get some big rocks from the beach and put in the tank. when you feed the turtle try to feed in a different place so you don't have to change the water often. if you can , get a filter so you don't have to clean the tank that much.
feeding i feed my turtles every other days. one day w vegetable ( any leaf) one day fruit ( like apple, cherry, grapes etc) one day commercial food , maybe some live fish etc

Don't listen to B's answer-it is horrendous and embarassing and not at all true.

Turtles require a large tank/rubbermaid container/stock tank (ten gallons per inch of shell), a submersible water heater (visitherm stealth is the best-3 watts per gallon), a great filter (2x size of tank-try aquaclear), a dock-the zoomed floating dock is great, two light fixtures (clamp lamps are cheap and can be purchased at the hardware store-get two 75 watt lamps), a heat bulb-can be any 75 watt household bulb, and a UVB bulb (the Reptiglo 5.0 Compact is the cheapest)..position the lights ten inches from basking area (the dock). 78F water, 90F basking.

You say you don't have a lot of money so I would go the stock tank route-they aren't clear but space is more important and your turtle will be more comfortable and many people take this route. Pricematch everything in Petsmart (print it off their website and show them the ad in the store-you will save a lot of money-the one here had the Reptiglo 5.0 too). Ordering online is also cheaper-try www.reptiledirect.com or bigals...

You need to feed them the number of pellets that would fit inside their head if it was hollow every other day excluding the neck. In between these days feed a fresh piece of romaine lettuce, sometimes a piece of carrot, a basil leaf, or a leaf of radish (not the radish itself). Offer calcium via cuttlebone/turtlebone-remove the hard backing (the side you cannot stick your fingernail in), it will break but is to be expected...stick a size the piece of a half dollar in every week in a veggie clip preferably.

Stay away from shrimp, krill, bugs, and meat as they have too much protein and will cause shell disorders like pyramidding (Google it to see how bad it is). 6 feederfish per month and one raspberry or blueberry is enough treats for one month-don't use goldfish-too fatty.

Also have two thermometers and a veggie clip is helpful (looks like a clown fish)...don't use gravel as it will dirty up the tank easier and your turtles will die if they eat it...try river rocks. http://www.redearslider.com is a great website/forum-I'm a member...it's free.

Stay away from turtle products like filters and tanks-they are too expensive and not very good. You should really check out http://www.redearslider.com for other information like reproduction and post what questions you have there and talk to other owners...

Good luck.

Just keep them in water and buy them reptile sticks or turtle bites, feed them twice a day and talk to them. I've had mine for three years and he's still alive! Good luck
