Did I miss something? This Q is about intelligent people and it was asked in the philosophy category. So why would any one narrow it down to politicians? If I had wanted to do that(which I did not), I would have posted the Q in the politics category and used the word politicians instead of intelligent people..

intelligence means understanding both sides so the argument is valid

i go with jack p.

(Interesting, though, that one(top)contributor says that this is
practically a requirement for politicians).
In my book, politicians are not highly thought-of; they are
usually clever people who realize that there is an advantage
in "playing-the-system". And as someone else on this site
told me(in no uncertain terms)- the ordinary folk need
Leadership too(!)
i dont believe thats the case, however much Both sides
"bleat".
For i stand by what i have been taught, and that is not-to-
argue with charlatans and web-spinners;however noisy
they are.

I don't believe it is intelligent to spend that much time on an issue one does not believe in. One must be convinced of ones believe and hope to explain it well enough to be understood by others. Flexibility and an open mind are more important factors then intelligence alone.

Anyone who has participated in a good debate team is capable of doing this. It is practically a requirement if you are going into politics.
