Download AVG and let it run to clean out your system. It is freeware and the best out there. Ad-aware should also be run to find spyware.

An external hard drive would be the best investment. Check out http://www.newegg.com/ProductSort/SubCategory.asp?SubCategory=414 for an example of what you can find. Or take the time to burn data CD backups of everything.
That said a slow system doesn't HAVE to be a virus or a trojan. I've got a 2002 model PC running XP Home and with the recent Windows updates along with programs insisting I need their helper program running at all times (ipod.exe, communication_helper.exe, and more) the system stumbles to a crawl every month or two. I'm constantly tweaking the thing to stop something from running. [Sidenote: about every 18 to 24 months I do a clean reinstall of the machine and I'm always impressed with it's speed. Then comes the MS updates and things begin to slow quickly.]
If this might be your problem, then get used to tweaking your system. Also consult your owner's manual or your manufacturer's website and consider upgrading the memory. Even XP anymore seems to need at least 500mb. While you're at it find out if you can upgrade the CPU as well. Check with a local ma and pop PC fix-it place and find out if they have parts if your machine is more than 3 years old. The good, local stores will sell you used working parts cheap.
I'm sure that others answering your question will tell you all about virus and adware removal programs. But for what it's worth, you stand a good chance that it's just legit program(s) running in the background that you just have to work at controlling.

Everyone's answer to computer performance issues is "i've got a virus and I'm going to do a system restore". If the computer is still running your better off doing a fix instead of trashing all your settings files photos etc.
If your antivirus program isn't detecting a virus, and it is fully updated the you most likely do not have a virus. What you most likely have is spyware, or malware slowing the works down.
Here are a couple programs that may help get your system back in shape.
Spybot - will search your computer for spyware.. http://spybot.com/en/index.html
CCleaner - This will clean up extra junk files that are clogging things up.. http://ccleaner.com/

Save all you music to another media (ie: a CD, floppy disk, another computer, mp3 player, etc.). Also save any other files you do not wish to lose. Then, consult the guide which should have come with your computer. Although I forget the term, you should be able to delete everything on your computer (including you operating system) and use the restore disk that came with the computer. This will effectively leave your computer with just the operating system. Then, redownload and anti-virus software you may own. Finally, redownload you music and other files.
This will wipe you computer completely clean of all viruses and junk files. We usually do our computers once every five years or so.

System restore won't help.
Offload your music to dvds or cds.
Get a good anti-virus and spyware software
Don't even consider reformatting and reinstalling the OS without further consultation.

System restore doesn't delete any files, so your music should be fine. Make sure you run appropriate anti virus software (try avg http://free.grisoft.com/ ) and anti-spyware (try spybot s&d http://www.safer-networking.org/ ).
Edit: If it is running slow, first try defragging, click start > all progs > accessories > system tools > disk defragmentor.

Check your Task Manager and see how many programs you have running and get back with us.
Anything more than 30, you are pushing towards a slow machine. 25 or less is real good.
