I know that New York City tried to buy the Dodgers in 1998 and moved them back. that would of suck for me. just wondering if any city actually own a team.

From 1985 to 1996, the Pittsburgh Pirates were owned by an entity called Pittsburgh Associates, an partnership between the City of Pittsburgh and several local businesses. Ownership was split 50/50 between the City and the private companies.

Besides that, there are several examples of minor-league teams that were owned by their respective cities.

The Cleveland Indians were publicly traded for a few years in the 1990s, though the Jacobs brothers maintained majority ownership. I think all the stock has been repurchased and the team taken private again.

Not any more. It used to happen on the minor league level every so often, but it really isn't very convenient for when the team loses money and needs a cash infusion quickly. Those days are now over.

In the NFL, it is illegal for community ownership of a team -- the Packers have been grandfathered in.

the citizens of Green Bay own the Packers.
But a municipal government owning a team. Do not think so.

i believe the only team in sports that is own by the city it is in is green bay packers. otherwise there would be no business person to start a team in such a small town

The only pro team to be owned by a city that I know of is the Green Bay Packers.
