With all the time swimmers spent in the pool and all the water they drink....During major swimming meeting do swimmer actually urinate in the pool versus going to the bathroom?

All swimmers urinate in the pool, it's just the way it is. The skin is a semi-permeable membrane that soaks up a LOT of water. You can't always take a bathroom break, especially at a competition meet, so you do what you must.

The chemistry of the pool is designed to attack and sanitize introduced compounds and urine is one of the things it is very good at rendering harmless.

And as mentioned above... There is ABSOLUTELY NO DYE that is used in a pool to show when someone urinates. This is a very common myth spread around consistently and those of us in the industry get asked about it all the time. It's told to children to stop them from going in the pool, but it ranks right up there with Santa Clause on the reality scale.

Yes. Sometimes, you've already used your free pass to the locker room and you don't want to interupt a set so you make sure no one is behind you, remind yourself that urine is sterile and chlorine is high, and you just go. Coaches never encourage this but they don't encourage "potty breaks" above age 8 either. During a swim meet, this doesn't happen often because there are breaks between events and time to go the restroom. Practices can be 1 - 3 hours long. People bring worse toxins into the pool on their body so this should not worry you!

Serious swimmers do. Like everyone else said, going to the bathroom during a workout is a watse of time, urine is nearly sterile and that's why there is chlorine in the pool.

Sure, lots of 'em, but not usually off the diving board. Healthy urine is nearly sterile and the water is chlorinated. swimming pool water usually contains about as much chlorine as tap water. The thing that smell so much is chlorine that has reacted with organics.

Dye is seldom used.

yes we do.
most coaches don't want you to go to the bathroom during practice, so what do we do. we pee in their pools.
it won't harm you anyways, urine fine enough to drink.
why would it harm you in a pool.

and by the way there is no such thing as a dye that turns purple or red when you pee in the pool.
