As i Yankee fan this years inconsistency is killing me. All that money for nothing and i was looking at past year and when they were winning their payroll was under 100 million. Clemens was getting paid 10 mill and all of a sudden he was a prorated 28 mill not even in his prime? I guess good marketing by him by getting vastly overpaid. Since 2000 yankees have spent over 10 millions a year for players like Mussina, Giambi, Kevin Brown, Randy Johnson, and many others. Mussina and Giambi were good for a few years but now are getting paid way to much. I think its time for them to work on getting young players like the Jeter, Posada, Williams, Pettitte, Rivera, and more recently Cano, Wang and Cabrera. I know they are loaded with young talent not quite major league ready but i think its time to unload some old guys and get a team with good chemistry.

Sure, some good young talent would be nice. But on an economic basis, which was your question, it makes no sense to lower the payroll. The Yankees are something of a loss leader for the YES Network, which has become something of a license to print money over the years. The Yankees have a tremendous economic incentive to win. That means getting the best players whenever possible.

Granted, you need to pick the players well, and you need the farm system to produce talent if only to keep the supply going, but an unlimited budget sure can help when trying to win.

*I am not just saying this because I am a Yankee fan.*

Well, you do have you're points the Yankees have been a spending machine.

They spent like 18 million on Randy Johnson, a total waste of money.

They spent 20 million dollars on Giambi, well I see what they were thinking in 2000 and 2001 Giambi was having the best years of his carrer and the Yankees had money because they won the world series in 2000 and were in it again in 2001.

Williams is gone so dont even talk about him.

Get rid of Jeter? You cant get rid of the captain no matter how bad you want to.

Posadas having the best year of his carrer and just made the all star game. Yes he is old but when he starts to struggle Brian Cashman will find a way to find someone else.

Well, Rivera, the Yankees cant find another good closing pitcher. Well, yes, Mariano is 37 but if you get rid of him you wipe out jersey sales and some fans.

You cant help but bring back Pettite to New York. The fans love 'em, and the Yankees had the money.

The Yankees have millions of dollars because they have so much fan suppourt and they can go out and buy any player.

Yes, the Yankees are old and aging, but you cant just say one day, ''I'm going to make my team young and fire Clemens Pettite Posada Jeter Rivera and Mussina.''

Oh and yes, Clemens was a bit of a waste but the Yankees kinda needed him and he has been excellent of late.

Intreseting question =)

I don't think Donna is that far off the mark. Our Yankees are in need of a major rebuild from the top on down. My vision is when they move into the "New Yankee Stadium" there will be an entire new outlook. A new manager, new front office staff, 75 percent of the players will be new - come on folks, no team should have more than 1 or 2 guys over 40!
I love what Brian Cashman has done for us (past championships) but the current front office guys aren't going to sit down at the end of this season (or next) and say "lets cut our payroll in half". What it's going to take is a complete change of philosophy. Steinbrenner can't live forever (I don't think so anyway, lol) and he we finally leaves I hope the new boss can see that going out and spending millions on veteran players that are past their prime is not the way to build a champion. Either is rushing young stars on the field that may not be entirely ready for the big show - there's been a few in the past couple of years that I thought they should have left in the minors alittle longer...I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens, change is bound to happen, right?

Sorry, but a realistic Yankee fan??

As long as there are fans that believe they are somehow entitlted to a title, there will be pressure on the Yankees to spend to make up for their lack of scouting and development.

What I don't get is that you draw 4 million fans, your payroll is $200 mil, that's $50 per ticket every game of the year that goes to payroll

Other Yankee fans have said that they want the excellent team and are willing to pay for it.

Even though a lot of the players are home grown talent, I don't think the Yankee management or their fans realize the difference isn't in signing everyone (though they have done that since 2001), but in being able to retain absolutely anyone they want (except Clemens and Pettite of course)

I do like to point out to the obnoxious Yankee fan that if Tampa Bay had $160 mil more to spend, they would kick the Yankees butt for a few years.
But you don't strike me as that type of fan and I congratulate you on that.

Yes, it is time and it will start this offseason. Abreu's contract is up, and there is no way he will be brought back, so there's $15 million gone. Clemens probably won't be back, and the contracts of Rivera and Posada are up, and they will be brought back but probably at lower prices. Also Pettitte may retire at the end of the season.

I think that the Yankees are going to lower payroll, but they shouldn't do it just because Yankee haters say they have to. They need to do a better job of doing it than they have, as Cashman has really done a bad job of getting guys for the bench, and better relievers, and it has killed them this season. They need to do a better job of getting supporting players, because Miguel Cairo, Will Nieves, and Kyle Farnsworth just aren't getting it done.

I prefer the screwed up mess we've got. The Yankees, pink Sox, and so on get to purchase up all-celeb communities mutually as the communities which don't make $a hundred million from their interior of sight television rights get to combat over who finishes with the worst checklist in baseball in line with annum. it relatively works out so nicely for the followers, gamers & vendors that a million/2 of MLB communities have little or no if any shot at ever making the playoffs. Why might MLB prefer to have a earnings cap like countless different important interest >you recognize, those the place the stadiums and arenas are complete on a daily basis/night because of the fact their group actual does have a existence like risk year in and year out. The gamers and vendors are all fools and that they are screwing baseball followers with their idiocy.

I guess in some way, I do agree. I think the Yankees should get rid of everyone on the team except for Jeter, Posada and ARod.

The Yankees will never be able to police themselves and stop the spending spree. Selig will have to enforce some sort of a salary cap to stop them and I doubt the current MLB owners will ever let that happen.
