Well, your best answer is one, if possible, otherwise, the truth eventually can come out, like today's announcement of the true cause of Jim Morrison's death. The biggest two that altered our history are: 1) FDR had prior knowledge of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, historical document now show. His thinking was that it would take such a "surprise" attack to rally the isolationist American people to join in World Wart II. 2) The Gulf of Tonkin incident, which was was largely an exaggeration and partly fabrication to convince both the American people and Congress to send many more American troops to Vietnam, and we know how terrible that worked out. Oh what the hell 3) Bush fabricating causes for USA involvement in Iraq, piggy backing on the 9/11 tragedies....there is lots more, but why pop everyone's bubble. You would love the book "Lies my Teacher Told Me."

I will mention one big secret which caught my attention, the Ali incident & a book that is a must read.
Alà the egyptian was one of the founders of Al Qaida & a member for years, he personaly trained the leader & all their people. He was incharge of the bombings of the US Embassies in Africa, he was the brain behind 9/11 & by then he had already joined the US Army, worked for the CIA and others, he belonged to the establishment for over 15 years. They all suspected & investigated but thought they could obtain more info from this guy than the damage he could do, it was a big secret. Never the less, he was caught by the FBI and Congress questioned him on his contacts, he spilled the whole thing out, an incredible true story.
You can perhaps get in touch with NatGeo & ask for a copy of the videos on the questioning of this monster. Check America's Watch Internet page. A fascinating story on how stupid people can be & how a secret can be kept by very many.
Check the book "The Secret World of JWB" by Eric Laurent, it is not fiction. I got it in Europe, never saw it in the US. More secrets kept by very many.
Bye

Depends on how the social network of the group is composed! A secret can hold even if millions of peoples are involved!!
Chinese society has an history of secret keeping that date back to Confucius (500b.c), and have succeed a lot by axing their system on dysinformation. When a rumor was beginning to spread, then the officials were kicking it subversively by spreading contradictory rumors, that finally overtrow the original and true story!
I can go on forever, but the masonic lodge and degree system favorise just that too!
Best exemple: The communist party of China has over 90 millions members, and yet can you tell me a chinese secret? Not sure the US can brag about learning some really sensitive things about the chinese government!

The Manhattan Project, Gulf of Tonkin Incident, Pearl Harbor, 9/11. Apparently quite a few can hold secrets, because if exposed they go bye bye. I'm sure more will be released as time continues.

i would say only one. to realy define a secret is done, made, or conducted without the knowledge of others. so really have a secret and to maintain the intregrity of the secret would to keep the information to only one person the holder of the secret. have you ever played that game when you were younger, where something is said to one person and then is passed to another and another untill it has gone throught several different people thus altering the information. when the game started someone could have said "i have to sneeze" and by the time it reaches your ears or the end of the line it could be "i like blue cheese" if a secret is told to only one person and is slowly spread throught a mass of people or even thought a small num,ber if people the information can become altered and turn into something completely untrue and becomes a rumor.

As long as there's a consequence of giving away the secret that the persons getting the secret won't want to get and it's enforceable, then any number of people could keep it.

It depends on who you are keeping the secret from. If they are keeping it from a person they could care less about and never see, then pretty much any number, especially if that person happens to be a hermit.

1. Or many if you send out misinformation. They all want to hear something from those who have secrets. Why not give them something to talk about?

Matt, I recognise you, there are those who cannot hide as they have been here many lifetimes. Or maybe once but have heard of us from another realm.
Move that there, put that here
